Manukau

The Manukau area extends from Mangere Bridge in the west to Orere Point in the east, and encompasses Manukau City as well as smaller townships such as Beachlands and Maraetai. This performance-based contract is audited by external auditors and has exceptionally high performance standards to be met, with stringent penalties if these are not achieved.

The contract is working really well and performance targets are being consistently met.

Over the past nine months the gardens have grown from 2 million square metres to just over 3 million square metres, due mainly to the vast amounts of revegetation gardens coming into the contract for maintenance. The contract includes street gardens, reserve gardens, major revegetation, new turf, asset maintenance, litter control, mowing, graffiti removal, and more.

We believe one of the benefits of the contract is that City Parks Services looks after around 50 "whole sites", which basically means that staff are responsible for everything at those sites, from gardens to rubbish, from mowing to sweeping, and whatever else is required.

Around 30 City Parks Services staff maintain Manukau, split into four teams, including the whole sites team, garden maintenance team, the vegetation control team (mowing & revegetation works), and the new assets team who look after the adventure playground in Sir Barry Curtis Park as well as many other fixtures across the Manukau area.

Manukau's jewel in the crown is Sir Barry Curtis Park, which covers a total land area of 94 hectares (larger than the Auckland Domain). The park is still under ongoing development, and is not expected to be totally completed until 2022. The skate park is complete, as is a children's playground and a battlefield-type playground for older children.

Growth in the area is likely to continue, especially with a new town centre planned for Flat Bush.

Benefits

  • Maintaining "whole sites" provides a fully co-ordinated approach and a better overall result

  • A performance based contract means a high standard is maintained at all times

  • A specialist team-based approach works well in covering the large contract area
