Auckland Airport

City Parks Services started maintaining Auckland Airport grounds on 1 July 2010 - and the airport team takes that responsibility very seriously indeed. Services provided include airside and landside mowing, weed control, maintenance of all hard surfaces, including the carpark, runway and carriage sweeping and litter control.

On 1 July 2010, City Parks Services also commenced with the maintenance of the indoor plants at the airport. Besides the aesthetical value these provide there is the added benefit of the contribution plants make in improving the indoor climate contributing towards an environment of reduced stress for everybody in the immediate surroundings.

A large amount of equipment is used at the airport, including large mowers mowing the grass around runway and tarmac areas. Once each stage of the mowing is completed, the grass is collected in large catchers to stop it being blown onto areas where it might interfere with aircraft and other airport vehicles.

Landside smaller mowers are used to mow the berms, edgers are used to trim grass verges, gardens are regularly planted and/or tidied, litter is collected and the carparks and roads are swept to keep them tidy. Larger sweepers are used airside to sweep the runways, tarmac and hard stand areas.

The airport team are very security conscious, being extremely aware of go and no go areas. After all, you wouldn't want to tangle with a plane coming towards you. They always have the right of way.

Pest control and managing wildlife hazards are also part of the contract. This includes setting traps for rabbits, mowing large tracts of land regularly to discourage the bird population and spraying to keep down the mosquito population. The latter is a MAF requirement to reduce the risk of mosquitoes boarding planes and inadvertently crossing borders.
